I first saw taiko drumming at the Cherry Blossom Festival. I heard the pounding rhythm from a distance and almost broke into a Shug-Avery-esque run to get to the stage. I was mesmerized by the music and the drummers’ passion was infectious. Taiko has a strong visual component – tight choreography makes the performance visually stunning.

At the time, I had no idea that such music existed in Japan. Clearly, I’ve been missing out.
